Jess Cornelius (US) With Support From Dateline (solo)

Jess Cornelius is finally bringing her new album CARE/TAKING to Wellington in live form.

Released in July this year on Portland label Tender Loving Empire, CARE/TAKING was named Feature Album on Double J Australia, Feature Album on Edge Radio (TAS) and Album of the Week on Melbourne’s 3RRR FM. In the US, KEXP Seattle added three songs to rotation and called it “A stunning display of expressive indie rock,” while NPR All Songs Considered included the album in its rundown of Best New Releases.

On CARE/TAKING, Cornelius sings of personal upheaval with striking lucidity and emotional nimbleness. Where her 2020 debut Distance found her moving across continents and entering a solo career after a long stint fronting the Australian band Teeth & Tongue, this LP has the songwriter firmly established in her California home but no less at a crossroads. Over 10 intricate and immediate songs, she grapples with squaring global crises and insecurities with the transformations and responsibilities in her life. It’s searching indie rock that’s as biting as it is comforting. And, while her melodies careen into unexpected places, they’re all anchored with a keen sense of timelessness.

Born and raised in New Zealand before moving to Melbourne, Australia, Cornelius released three critically acclaimed albums as Teeth & Tongue. After relocating to Los Angeles, she released her 2020 album Distance, which garnered praise across the US, Australia, and the UK. Cornelius continues to live in Los Angeles and has toured across the US with Ty Segall, Islands, and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.

“Those twin impulses, the joy of new life and the fear it can provoke, propel their way through this album. It’s compelling stuff, but even more impressive is the composition: bold choices confidently made.” —Tony Stamp, The Sampler RNZ

Support from Katie Everingham of Wellington's Dateline.

Everingham’s lyrical prowess and humorous story telling aptly captures the complex emotions and vulnerabilities that come with motherhood and moving into your early thirties. Resonating with deep emotion, Dateline’s back catalogue packs a one-two punch of crunched guitars and power pop sensibilities.

2024 has already been a banner year for Dateline, they’ve been shortlisted for the APRA AMCOS Silver Scroll Awards, topped the SRN and 95bFM charts and released their sophomore album, It's All Downhill From Here.

The songcraft expressed on It's All Downhill From Here is indeed consistently tip top, with close attention paid to gripping hooks and devastating wordplay - UTR
