Vogelmorn Sessions – Newtown Rocksteady!

After the rip-roaring success of our first Vogelmorn Sessions event, Friends of Vogelmorn are thrilled to invite you all back to the beautiful Vogelmorn Hall for another round!

This time be sure to bring your dancing shoes for one of Wellington’s biggest, best-loved, longest-running and grooviest vintage reggae bands: Newtown Rocksteady!

At the family-friendly time of 4-7pm you’re encouraged to bring the kids, enjoy some delicious food from DAMASCUSok Cafe (optionally included in ticket price) and boogie away the early evening. (With plenty of time left for whatever else you might have planned.)

Newtown Rocksteady formed over 13 years ago as the house band for a ‘Community Dance Night’ at another suburban hall, just down the hill from Vogelmorn in – you guessed it – Newtown! A loose collective of local musos would get together every Friday night as the sun went down on the heady days of summer, 2007 to play music for friends, families, and kids to dance to. Their material – mostly drawn from forty years back in the faraway land of Jamaica where another long, hot summer (1967) had inspired a new sound that came from ska and evolved into reggae, called ‘rocksteady’ – was chosen specifically for it’s easy danceability!

As time went by the loose collective condensed into a solid unit and they used this regular casual gig to build the foundations of their ever-expanding repertoire and most importantly to hone their groove, which has been rocking pretty steadily ever since. As the band evolved they have gone on to release 3 albums, become regular crowd favourites at the Newtown Festival, play at WOMAD New Zealand and tour the country many times over (mostly sticking to their home-away-from-home at the top of the South Island). 13 years and innumerable packed dance-floors later, here we are!

Newtown Rocksteady are really looking forward to going back to their roots with this one!

They will be playing old favourites as well as road-testing some brand new tunes from a brand new album that they have recently begun working towards.
